  1. Columbus Museum of Art

Originally known as the Columbus Gallery of Fine Art, the Columbus Museum of Art (CMA) was the first art museum to have a charter recognized by the state of Ohio. Since its formation in 1878, the CMA has become a world-renowned institution thanks to its extensive collection of fine arts, folk art, and photography by American and European artists.

The permanent collection includes works by Picasso, Paul Cezanne, and Mary Cassatt. Exhibitions highlight a range of subjects from comic book art to historical photographs. During your visit, be sure to stop by the museum store, where you’ll find T-shirts, posters, and unique gifts. You’ll also want to take a stroll through the lovely gardens.

  1. National Veterans Memorial and Museum

The National Veterans Memorial and Museum (NVMM) is the only institution in the United States that pays tribute to all of America’s veterans, from all branches of service in both peacetime and wartime eras. Before its 2018 opening, Architectural Digest recognized the stunning museum building as one of the year’s most anticipated buildings.

Permanent exhibits highlight the lives of soldiers, sailors, Marines, Air Force members, and Coast Guard members. During your visit, you’ll learn how service members serve the country during times of war and times of peace, and the sacrifices made by family members. On the grounds of the NVMM is a 2.5-acre memorial grove featuring elm trees and a reflection pool.

  1. Central Ohio Fire Museum

Located in an authentic 1908 fire engine house, the Central Ohio Fire Museum celebrates everyday heroes from the past to the present. Highlights of the museum include a horse-drawn fire truck and a hand-operated hook and ladder. You can also view vintage uniforms and badges, as well as photographs of the men and women who have served generations of Columbus residents. Other exhibits educate visitors about fire safety and illustrate the dangers of fire. A burned items display features damaged items retrieved from actual house fires.

  1. Ohio Craft Museum

The Ohio Craft Museum serves as the main showcase for pieces created by Ohio Designer Craftsmen, an organization whose mission is to promote Ohio artisanship. The museum’s permanent collection features pieces by ceramist Jack Earl, glass artist Mark Matthews, and basket artist Dorothy Gill Barnes. The Ohio Craft Museum also hosts rotating exhibitions, many of which feature functional crafts available to purchase. Inside the gift shop, you’ll find everything from handmade cookware to jewelry. If you want to create a piece of your own, you can purchase an arts & crafts kit or participate in an online class.
