The 2023 Toyota 4Runner comes in eight trims, from the base SR5 to the range-leading TRD Pro. There's also the Limited, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Sport, and SR5 Premium. Toyota released its rough-and-tumble SUV in a 40th Anniversary Special Edition for 2023, too. Toyota offers the 2023 Toyota 4Runner with a 270-horsepower V-6. This sole engine setup mates well with a five-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain delivers 278 pound-feet of torque and will get you where you want to go, whether through rush hour traffic or the dirt road less traveled.

Every Toyota 4Runner that is outfitted with four-wheel-drive is a capable off-roader. It touts essential features like a two-speed transfer case, multiple skid plates, and 9.6 inches of maximum ground clearance. Its lightly weighted steering makes it easy to maneuver through a crowded parking lot or a forested trail, and it can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

If you plan to spend more time on dirt than pavement, opt for the TRD Pro variant. It's the lineup's apex predator with beefy TRD springs, selectable terrain modes, a locking rear differential, a multiview terrain camera, and low-speed crawl control.

The standard 4Runner offers two spacious rows and seating for five people. A small available third row bumps its capacity up to seven. However, these seats are best suited for children. The driver's seat provides a commanding view and good all-around visibility. Even the base trim offers a long list of appealing amenities like a cloth upholstered, eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a reclining second row, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
